How to play Football Connections

Football Connections is the daily grouping game: sixteen players on the grid and four groups of four, each with a hidden link. Pick four and submit — right, and the group is revealed; wrong, and one of the four credits is gone.

The links that can show up

At most two groups of the same type per day: four clubs would be monotonous.

The promise the game never breaks: the solution is unique

There is exactly one way to split the sixteen into the four groups. Not "at least one" — exactly one, and that is proved by enumeration on every published day, three times: on generation, on packing, and in the test that runs on every build.

That is the difference between a hard game and an unfair one. With two valid splits, you would hit a real logic and the screen would say you were wrong.

The trap, and why it is deliberate

On average 2 or 3 of the sixteen fit more than one group. That is what forces you to eliminate instead of just recognising: the player who looks like one of the Spaniards may be the fourth of the Valencia group. When three of your four are right, the screen says "one away…" — the hint teaches without giving anything away.

Three strategies that work

Frequently asked questions

When does the grid change?

At midnight, in your device's local time. Everyone plays the same grid on the same day.

Is my progress saved?

It is, in your own browser — with the day's attempts — and separate from the other games.

Does sharing give the answer away?

No. Each line is one attempt and each square is the colour of the chosen player's group — the text shows the path, and never says which group is which.

Are there other criteria games?

There are: Football Grid, Football Impostor and Football Bingo.
