How to play Lineup Legends

Lineup Legends is Lineup with one restriction: retired players only. Every day eleven countries line up — the same for the whole world — and you field one legend from each into the eleven slots of a 4-3-3.

The rules, in 30 seconds

  1. See the queue. The eleven countries appear in the order they will be played.
  2. Name a legend from the current country. Any player from that country who has stopped playing counts.
  3. The slot comes from the position, and each slot takes one player.
  4. With no slot left, the country stays empty — and the score is how many of the eleven you filled.

The legend criterion, declared

"Legend" here is not an opinion: it is a player whose career our database closes ten years ago or more. His last recorded spell ended by 2016, and no spell of his is open.

The ten-year cut has a measured reason: the data source often omits the end of a career, and deciding by elimination ends up calling retired someone who still plays. Against the 702 players we curated by hand, the one-year cut makes mistakes — active names would get in — and the ten-year cut makes none. Whoever stayed undefined is left out: better a missing name than a claim we cannot back.
