Goltexto — the football Contexto

Every day a secret player, and each guess comes back with a closeness score: sharing a club is worth more than being from the same country, which is worth more than playing in the same position. Guess someone with nothing in common and the score stays ice cold; guess a squad teammate and it heats up. There is no limit on guesses — it is the only game on the site that does not punish mistakes. Free, no sign-up, in English, Portuguese and Spanish.

How to play Goltexto

Goltexto is the daily proximity game: there is a secret player and every guess comes back with a score. The more the guessed player resembles the secret one, the higher the score — and there is no guess limit. It is free and it does not punish a miss.

How the score works

The score is the sum of what the two players have in common, and the order of weights answers the question "what makes two players look alike?":

  1. A shared club — the strongest signal. The first is worth a lot; the second confirms; from the third on the gain drops.
  2. Same country (or, if the country does not match, same continent).
  3. Same position (or the same sector of the pitch).
  4. Same debut decade, then similar age.

The scale runs from −30 (nothing in common) to 100, and 100 is only the player himself: whoever gets very close stops at 96. Next to each guess the screen says why the score was that — without it, a score is a magic number and nobody learns.

The rule the score never breaks

A player with more things in common never scores lower than one with fewer. The function is a sum of parts that only grow, and that is tested on every build across the whole pool — because it is that promise the player uses to learn from the score.

At midnight, in your device's local time. Everyone plays the same player on the same day.

Is my progress saved?

It is, in your own browser — with all the day's guesses — and separate from the other games.

Does sharing give the answer away?

No. The text says how many guesses you used and how they split between hot and cold, with no names.
